Helen Looks After Her Neighbors
Tenants at the NCS Residence often call Helen the mother of the building because of the care she shows her neighbors. Helen frequently checks in on others, takes a leading role at the monthly tenant meetings, and tries to make sure everyone feels special.
When NCS started hosting in-person community meals again (for residents vaccinated against COVID-19), Helen brought snacks and drinks so that everyone who attended would have something extra to enjoy their first meal together in more than a year.
When the tenants aren't gathering together, Helen makes it a point to check in on them individually to ensure they are all okay.
"I check in on my neighbors. I knock on their door, or if I see them out of their room, I ask how they're doing. Especially in the summertime," Helen shared. "I'll ask them, 'Are you cool? Is your AC on? Are you drinking water?' I have the utmost respect for the people in the building."
Helen's dedication to the NCS community does not go unnoticed. Monique, the Program Director at the NCS Residence, appreciates Helen taking the time to look after the other residents in the building, saying, "Helen is very supportive of her neighbors and is always the first to inform staff when something does not seem right. She is an advocate for change."
Along with checking on other tenants' health and safety, Helen also helps them have fun. Every year, Helen emcees the NCS Residence holiday talent show, leading the group in song and encouraging everyone to participate.
Helen's care for her community extends beyond the walls of her building. She also volunteers at Manhattan Church of Christ's meal program, serving food to anyone who comes by in need of something to eat.
"It just feels good, taking care of people," Helen continued.
Thank you, Helen, for taking care of your neighbors!
